Gambia has followed Zimbabwe and pulled out of the commonwealth. The country has long been at the loggerheads with the UK. The current President, yahya Jammeh, assumed power in 1994 through a military coup, and critics have accused him of repressing freedoms. In 2012, he ordered the shooting of 9 prisoners. Gambia is among the lowest countries in observing human rights, and is also among the poorest countries in
the world.
